mPlayit: Games are 4 Times More Popular on iPhone Than Android

mPlayit, a Facebook-based application directory based in Ashburn, Virginia, announced today that games were four times more popular among iPhone users than Android users. In fact, mPlayit data, based on their own directory, indicates that Blackberry users, who are more prone to using their device for business purposes, were twice more likely to search for game applications than Android users.

mPlayit, a Facebook-based application directory based in Ashburn, Virginia, announced today that games were four times more popular among iPhone users than Android users. In fact, mPlayit data, based on their own directory, indicates that Blackberry users, who are more prone to using their device for business purposes, were twice more likely to search for game applications than Android users.

According to mPlayit, 83 percent of Android application searching and downloads on mPlayit’s directory and store were non-game related, while just 13 percent involved games. Nearly two-thirds of iPhone users, meanwhile, were interested in games and using their device for that purpose.

In another trend for mobile users, mPlayit reports that location-based applications are receiving an increased number of downloads, though there was no report on exactly how many downloads were being realized. Loopt, Foursquaure, Gowalla were apparently big leaders on the directory, but other applications, including FastMall and AroundMe (for the iPhone) also were experiencing greater downloads. In addition to location-based applications, barcode-scanning apps also show signs of increasing popularity and are the top of the utilities category for both iPhone and Blackberry users.

This news comes despite a January report from mPlayit that indicated that despite iPhone’s tremendous volume of available applications that there were similarities between the platforms in application categories. The similarities appear to be strongest in cross-platform applications, where apps such as Evernote and Pandora Radio were highly popular among users of iPhones, Blackberrys and Android-based phones.
