Stuck in Traffic? Maybe I95travelinfo.net Can Help

If you didn’t already know, The Washington, DC area is number two in the country in traffic congestion, according to research by the Texas Transportation Institute.

Yearly, area drivers heading to work in DC, Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland waste 62 hours in rush-hour traffic.

Nationally, the average U.S. driver lost nearly 37 hours gridlocked traffic, over 2.8 billion gallons of gas and nearly 3 weeks worth of gas per driver.  Gridlock costs the U.S. $87 billion each year in wasted gas.
  • Travel is up. According to AAA data, during this past July 4th weekend, In Virginia alone, close to 970,650 Virginia travelers took a trip of at least 50 miles away from home, an increase of 19.3% from 2009.
  • I-95 south of the Beltway sees 300,000 trips a day.

Local Traffic’s New Technology Tool

Just in time for the July 4th holiday weekend, a new web site, i95travelinfo.net is live. This web site provides real-time traffic information and estimated drive times for 24 metropolitan areas for Washington, DC, 24 metropolitan areas and 15 states along the East Coast/I-95 corridor.

I95travelinfo.net offers travelers speed and congestion information on the I-95 corridor, including I-95, the beltways surrounding each major city, and all associated routes that together make up the corridor.

Visitors to the web site can manipulate the map to zoom to any of the 15 states and Washington D.C.  Traffic congestion information is presented using various color codes; green to indicate free flow, yellow for moderate congestion, red for heavy congestion, maroon for stop-and-go, and black to indicate a closed road within the coverage area.

The web site is sponsored by the I-95 Corridor Coalition. The Coalition is a partnership of transportation agencies, toll authorities, and related organizations, from the State of Maine to the State of Florida – working together to improve long distance travel for passengers and freight.

"One of the Coalition's goals is to make it easy to learn about traffic conditions along the I-95 Corridor," said George Schoener, Executive Director, I-95 Corridor Coalition.  "i95travelinfo.net continues to be an important element in supporting that goal at a time when travelers along the corridor can benefit from our efforts the most."

The content for the Long Distance Trip Planning website has been designed to be utilized without the use of mobile devices.  The web site is designed for standard PC browsers, and is not formatted for mobile device usage.

The I-95 Corridor Coalition partnered with infrastructure planning firm PBS&J and INRIX Traffic Services, a real-time traffic information provider, to develop the web site.
