10% of Inc. Magazine’s 500 Fastest Growing Private Companies are DC Region Tech Companies

The numbers and performance by DC area technology companies are staggering.

Fairfax, Virginia based Foreground Security posted a 3-year growth rate of 8,290%. On-line training company, Lurn, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, posted the "lowest" 3-year rate of growth at "only" 609.3%.

The breakdown of the DC area companies on the Inc. 500 list reflects the larger national trend in the overall growth of government service firms with 31 companies. The complete DC area list appears below.

Company breakdown by service category:

- 31 government services companies
- 8 IT services enterprises
- 5 business and products services companies
- 1 software firm
- 1 energy company
- 3 security services companies
- 1 telecom company
- 2 financial services firms
- 1 advertising and marketing company
- 1 engineering company
- 1 logistics and transportation companies.

The list of 500 companies was excerpted from The 2010 Inc. 5000. The larger list shows the Government Services sector as having the biggest gain in terms of the number of companies on the list, up 33 percent from last year to 335 companies. Government Services was also the second-fastest-growing sector in terms of median revenue growth, posting a 202 percent gain over the 2006-2009 measuring period. More than half of these companies are based in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

New York boasts 410 Inc. 5000 companies, making it the top metro area, followed by Washington, D.C. (363), Los Angeles (262), Chicago (203), and Boston (189).
